Both Deceased Students Identified in the Providence Campus Shooting as Law Enforcement Persist in Manhunt for Perpetrator.
Two students who died in the recent tragic incident at Brown University were being remembered Monday – as a manhunt for their assailant carried on following the release by Rhode Island officials of the single suspect of interest in the case.
Honoring a Lost Student
Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was described as “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, as stated by the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a ceremony on Sunday.
Cook was the vice-presidency of Brown’s chapter of the campus GOP group, according to the organization. Karoline Leavitt also shared sympathies publicly, stating: “Words cannot express. Thinking of her loved ones and companions, especially her parents.”
The Second Victim
The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, from Uzbekistan in his initial year at the renowned school, family members said.
The victim's identification was verified by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.
“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. His ambitions were lofty of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and aiding others,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a memorial statement.
The Shooting Incident
Nine other people were wounded in the violent event in the school of engineering of Brown’s university in Providence, during the school’s final exam period.
Law enforcement reported on Sunday evening that a 24-year-old male detained in a police operation at a lodging about approximately 17 miles from the scene earlier in the day was set to be freed.
“A perpetrator remains free,” stated the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.
He continued, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you need to change course and head another way, and that is the current situation over the last 24 hours or so.”
Public Fear
Brett Smiley, Brett Smiley, noted: “We know that this is likely to cause renewed concern for our public”.
The assailant began shooting inside a lecture hall in the building on over the weekend, firing more than 40 rounds from a handgun, a law enforcement official reported to the Associated Press.
Law enforcement that entered the hotel recovered two handguns and two ammunition clips when the person of interest was taken into custody, the news agency reported.
Those Hurt
Among those wounded, one student was released from the hospital, stated Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in critical but stable condition, and one was in critical condition, police said on Sunday.
Durham Academy, a private academy in the city of Durham, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.
Further Tributes
Cook was remembered at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only during her upbringing... but at the university she was an incredible light in that particular place as well.”
The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the organization. “She was famed for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she aided her club and other students,” he said.
An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by the student's death in a statement. “Our profound condolences go out to the Umurzokov family, companions, and fellow students and mourn the loss of his promising future.”
National Context
The weekend's murders at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US higher education institution with about over seven thousand undergraduate and 3,000 graduate students, happened during one of at least nearly 400 mass shootings reported in the US so far in this year, according to statistics. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
