Delhi Rises to Dangerous Haze After Festival of Lights
As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of the world's most polluted city were faced with inhaling severely hazardous air that was classified as the "severe" range.
Alarming Pollution Readings
Various sections of the capital registered an AQI over 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the recommended level established by the World Health Organization.
Particular areas, levels of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of 1,800, amounting to fifteen to twenty times exceeding acceptable standards.
Fireworks Restrictions and Recent Changes
Beginning in 2020, officials had enforced a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of pyrotechnics during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the dangerous pollution that blankets the capital as winter begins.
Nevertheless recently, the newly elected city government appealed to the supreme court to request a easing of the ban.
They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically criticized by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a balance between "tradition and public health".
Judicial Decision and Implementation
To the disappointment of public health and environmental activists, judges complied with the appeal, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be used during designated time windows throughout the Diwali.
Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive flouting of the designated hours across the capital, with little enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.
Numerous air quality sensors throughout the city recorded contamination spiking around late evening to the most severe measurements seen during the festival in at least three years.
International Implications
Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during the festival also sparked a controversy with bordering Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province pointing to declining atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on contaminants coming from neighboring India following the festivities.
Persistent Pollution Crisis
Extremely elevated concentrations of pollution in Delhi have persisted as a significant challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the condition showing no improvement.
During celebratory seasons, the concentration of dangerous particulate matter in the air has been observed to increase dramatically to 70% higher the most severe levels ever documented in Beijing, which was previously viewed as the globally most contaminated city.
Multiple Pollution Sources
This crisis in Delhi is caused by a mix of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, construction activities, waste incineration and smoke from farm burning in adjacent regions of farming communities.
Within these states, farmers regularly set their fields on fire to prepare for next season, generating hazardous pollution that then gets trapped over the metropolitan area as colder air descends.
Health and Economic Impact
Both financial and medical toll on the nearly 33 million people residing in the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to multiple studies.
This pollution leads to high levels of nervous system, cardiovascular and breathing disorders, and can potentially cause cancer.
The pollution is projected to be causing approximately 10k early deaths per year in the capital.
