Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced outrage after Donald Trump accused a contingent of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and declared they should be taken into custody and punished "by death" following their posting of a disputed video.

The Content That Triggered the Dispute

The clip, shared on earlier this week, features six Democratic elected officials who in the past worked in armed forces or defense roles.

"Similar to us, you all swore an pledge to defend and defend this constitution," the representatives affirmed in the brief video. "Currently, the threats to our constitution don't only come from foreign nations, but from right here at home. Our statutes are explicit, you can reject unlawful commands, you can decline unlawful commands, you should refuse illegal orders. No one has to execute orders that violate the statutes or our founding principles."

Donald Trump's Incensed Reply

The video message appeared to prompt a angry response from the former president.

In a subsequent publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Representatives Respond

Following Trump's statements on that day, House Democratic leader published a unified declaration condemning the statements.

"Violent politics has no role in America," they declared. "Representatives who were featured in the video all acted our United States with tremendous national pride and distinction. We strongly condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and harmful calls for execution against congressional representatives, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."

The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in touch with protective services "to guarantee the safety of these officials and their families."

"Donald Trump must right away remove these extreme online messages and recant his violent rhetoric before he leads to violence," the statement continued.

Representatives' Firm Response

The representatives who appeared in the video also released a declaration.

"We serve as veterans and national security professionals who love this nation and made an pledge to protect and defend the constitution of the United States," they said. "Our pledge continues forever, and we aim to maintain it. No intimidation, coercion, or call for violence will deter us from that sacred obligation."

"The significant point is that the ex-president deems it punishable by execution for us to restate the law," they stated. "Armed forces members should recognize that we have their support as they carry out their oath to the founding principles and responsibility to follow only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."

They stated: "Every American must unite and denounce the ex-president's demands for our death and political violence. This is a period for principled stance."

Additional Governmental Reactions

The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's comments and posted on social media: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is demanding the execution of elected officials."

He continued: "This is an outright THREAT. Every Senator, all representatives, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this immediately and without qualification."

The Conservative official defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", describing the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "This represents very dangerous, you have leading members of the legislature instructing military personnel to ignore directives, I think that represents historic in the nation's past."

The GOP official also reportedly informed media outlets that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the crime of sedition" but that "legal experts have to examine the wording and decide all that."

Administration Response

During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when questioned by a reporter, "Does the president want to execute members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson replied: "Absolutely not."

"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the representative said. "There are current representatives of the US Congress who worked together to organize a recorded statement to members of the American armed forces, to active duty service members urging them to defy the commander in chief's lawful orders."

She said: "The sanctity of our military relies on the chain of command, and if that system is broken, it can result in people getting killed, it can result in confusion, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are essentially promoting."
