Finland Upsets Two-Time Reigning Champions US in World Junior Quarter-Finals.

Finland's Arttu Välilä scored the decisive goal at 2:11 of extra time as Finland engineered a remarkable four to three victory over the reigning two-time champion United States on Friday evening in the IIHF World Junior Championship quarter-finals.

"We must give full credit to the US," remarked Finland's leader A. Kiviharju. "That's a fantastic squad, full of great individuals and a well coached team. But I mentioned we wanted that payback from the previous final, and I believe we kind of earned it this evening."

In the semi-finals Sunday, Finland will face Sweden, while the Canadians will play the Czech Republic. The Swedes defeated Latvia 6-3, Team Canada had a first-period five-goal outburst in a seven to one rout over the Slovakian team, and Czechia topped the Swiss by a six to two score.

Thrilling Third Period and Extra Session

The Michigan State Spartan L. Ryker tied it for the United States with one minute and thirty-three seconds left in regulation and the Notre Dame goalie Nick Kempf pulled for an additional skater.

L. Tuuva and Joona Saarelainen found the net in a 55-second span in the third period to hand their team a 2-1 advantage. He leveled the score at two-all with 7:17 to go, then assisted on Saarelainen’s game-leading goal with six minutes and twenty-two seconds on the clock. J. Saarelainen also earned a helper on the first goal.

Notable Performances and Post-Game Comments

The Boston University defenseman Cole Hutson recorded a goal and an assist for the Americans after being struck in the back of the head versus the Swiss and sitting out the next two contests.

"In my opinion we executed well for most of the game," Hutson said. "But the small details that they got, a lot of their Grade-A chances came from our errors."

His university colleague Cole Eiserman handed the U.S. a two to one lead on a power play with 9:45 left in the second period. He accepted a pass from his teammate and fooled the Finnish goaltender with a quick shot from the right circle.

Hutson scored on a rush 35 seconds into the second. H. Ruohonen tied it at 4:46 on a snap shot from the left side.

  • The American netminder recorded 21 saves.

The Americans fell in their last two games – falling six to three to Sweden on Wednesday night in the final preliminary game – after winning their first three.

"It has been an honor to coach this team," stated the American bench boss. "Our guys played a terrific game tonight and fell just a bit short. Give Finland. It's an hollow feeling right now, but our guys left everything on the ice."

Additional Quarter-Final Action

In the second match in Minneapolis, the Canadians overwhelmed Slovakia with the five-goal first.

Cole Reschny, Tij Iginla, Michael Misa, S. O'Reilly and B. Martin tallied in the opening twenty minutes, and P. Martone and Cole Beaudoin connected in the second. J. Ivankovic turned aside 21 saves.

"This demonstrates how powerful we are," Martin remarked. "Taking a 5-0 advantage, it kind of kills their confidence."

In the first quarter-final, A. Frondell scored twice for Team Sweden against Latvia. The defenseman L. Sahlin Wallenius contributed a goal and two helpers to aid the Swedes stay perfect in their five outings.

In Minneapolis T. Galvas, Samuel Drancak, Adam Jiricek, Petr Sikora, J. Klima and J. Fibigr scored for the Czechs.

Relegation Game Result

Germany triumphed in the relegation game, defeating Denmark 8-4. Manuel Schams had two goals to ensure his nation retain its spot for the following season in the main event. Denmark was relegated to the second tier.
