New research indicates that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing these medications need to be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the medication report a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become starving," said a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural management.
