Manchester United Set to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL team.
Departure from Bayern was expected since she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the club's fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen the Attack
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a major boost to United’s forward line. She has been highly consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing the German international coincides with a period when United appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent performances feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought further activity:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
