New Year Partygoers Advised to Dress Warmly with Snowfall Expected Throughout the UK
Forecasters are saying a chilly beginning to the new year, with snowfall anticipated over large parts of the UK. Celebrants are being urged to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Festive Events Go Ahead Despite Alerts
Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay festivities are set to take place, unlike last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be essential," said the national forecaster.
Displays Under Clear but Frosty Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks displays, with dry conditions and open skies. Readings are forecast to be low, making warm wraps vital, said forecasters.
Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Extensive Advisories for Friday
As we enter Friday, snow alerts are in place across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.
- Transport is expected to be disrupted.
- People are advised to plan for delays for travel on the road.
- Hold-ups and call-offs are anticipated on the transport network.
The Mercury Expected to Fall Further
With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are set to fall even more as snowfall and high winds are likely to hit the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Health Warnings Activated
At the same time, amber-level health advisories are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency stated this indicated the weather was expected to trigger major effects across health and social care services. This involves a potential rise in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.
