Outrage Surges as Former President Trump's Comments on Rob Reiner Ignites Sharp Criticism
Figures from across the partisan aisle and the entertainment industry are uniting to denounce Donald Trump for his statements following the tragic deaths of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Controversial Online Statement
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Los Angeles home, Trump took to his platform to label the deceased director as "anguished and suffering". In a post, he claimed Reiner's demise was "due to the anger he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post then pivoted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".
Police Developments and Detention
Authorities have since announced the arrest of the couple's adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in relation to the case. It is reported his bond was established at a substantial sum.
A Torrent of Criticism from Public Figures
The reaction to Trump's post was immediate and harsh.
“What a appalling and vile statement,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also condemned the statements. Goldberg referenced prior comments from Trump regarding political violence, asking, "Do you have no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"
California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "He is a sick man."
Mirroring this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a despicable piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just lost it. Now implying the Reiners brought on their own demise because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."
Criticism from Within Political Ranks
Some GOP lawmakers also voiced disapproval.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". She also mentioned struggles with addiction and mental health within families.
Fellow GOP representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disgraceful" given the circumstances. He publicly dared members in his political party to justify the comments.
The Director's Legacy and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a previous conversation, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the dangers of autocracy should Trump return to power.
"We see autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States fall, there’s a danger that democratic systems collapse around the world."
Despite his strong criticisms, Reiner had in the past shown "absolute horror" and condemned violence for political ends without reservation following the shooting of a different political figure.
A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the story of the photo shoot, noting Trump's request for "special hairspray" as being photographed on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
