A 60-day voyage around Australia was terminated following the fatal incident of an older female passenger who was stranded by the vessel on a remote island.

The elderly woman had been hiking on Lizard Island with other travelers from the vessel, but separated from the party for a break. The liner departed without her and returned after some time after the crew realised the lady was unaccounted for.

An extensive search operation found her remains the subsequent day.

Authorities are investigating the tragedy, alongside police and the medical examiner.

Head of the voyage organizer said that guests and crew on the Coral Adventurer were informed that the remainder of the voyage had been called off due to the "unfortunate death and earlier mechanical issues".

In a statement, he added that guests would be given a total repayment, and said the company was working "to coordinate the return journeys of the travelers via chartered flights".

Officials also published an updated statement, and said they had "issued a directive to the Commander" prohibiting any additional guests from boarding the liner.

The official said that they would inspect the vessel in Cairns upon its coming back.

Sequence of Events

The vessel originally sailed from the coastal city on 24 October, and was just two days into the journey at the time of the 80-year-old's passing. The tropical location was the first stop on the voyage.

Travelers on board - who generally pay substantial amounts of currency to take part in the voyage - were transported there for a shore visit with the choice of trekking or snorkelling.

Family Statement

The offspring of the deceased woman said that her relatives was "shocked and saddened that the liner left Lizard Island after an organised excursion without my mother".

In her statement, she characterized her mum as an "energetic elderly person" who was a participant of a bushwalking group.

"According to scant facts we have been told, it looks that there was a lapse of attention and basic judgment," she said.

She added that she desired the investigation would be able to identify what "the organization should have undertaken that might have preserved Mother's life".

"Based on information from the authorities that it was a extremely warm period, and mum took sick on the hill climb," she revealed.

"They requested her to head down, without accompaniment. Then the ship sailed away, reportedly without performing a passenger count.

"At some stage in that process, or shortly after, mother died, by herself."

Company Reaction

Through an announcement, the Chief Executive confirmed that the operator was "working closely with officials to support their examination".

He said that the company was "deeply sorry that this has happened" and had extended its complete assistance to the relatives.

Shipping Sector Procedures

The vessel accommodates up to one hundred twenty passengers with forty-six crew, according to company details. It was specially constructed to access isolated regions of the nation's coast and is equipped with "auxiliary vessels" - minor craft used to transport passengers on day excursions.

Incidents of this nature are uncommon, and passenger vessels have systems to record which passengers are boarding or leaving, according to travel authorities.

"Leaving covertly or [back] onboard just isn't an choice," one expert remarked.

Shipping companies regard these processes very seriously and have "sophisticated systems in place to stop such events from happening," the specialist added.
