The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 people perished and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when assailants fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.

The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the victims who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She described the events before the attack, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, a senior official said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
