On the eve of his six-year milestone in charge, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his continued role with the club is directly connected to delivering trophies.

The Journey So Far: The Arteta Era

Arteta took over on the 20th of December in 2019 and soon guided the team to an FA Cup triumph within months. Yet, that early success is still his sole major honor after taking over from Unai Emery.

“Yes,” he stated in response to a query about his future past 2027. “But it’s about today. And numerous factors need to fall into place in the near future as well to warrant that continuation.”

Saturday night brings the anniversary with a game facing Everton, the very same club Arsenal met the day after his role was made public.

League Position and Pressure

As chasing Manchester City playing against West Ham in an earlier kick-off, Arsenal face being knocked off first place in the Premier League prior to their fixture. This potential shift even with Arteta presiding over a squad that has endured in excess of one hundred injury setbacks since the start of last season.

Arteta is tied down by 18 months to run on the extension he agreed to in 2024, however, he knows that results must come sooner rather than later.

Earning the Right

He went on to explain, stressing the daily requirement to validate his position. “My belief is that a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that’s how how you react, how you address the media, how you step into the dressing room, the instructions you give.”

Arteta continued, praising the consistent faith from the club's ownership, yet identifying the squad's dedication as paramount. “Ultimately, the most important ones are those players... Over this half-decade, I’ve seen just players with a standard of focus, desire to learn and give the maximum to the team.”

Latest Fitness Blow

The team heads into the Everton match managing an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been sidelined with a muscle problem that is anticipated to see him miss action for the coming weeks.

Confidence in the Path

Even with the fitness woes and the high-stakes environment, Arteta feels the club's “objectives and communication” are completely changed from when he initially took over.

He pointed to the record-breaking achievements as a sign they are nearing their goal. “You look at the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still have yet to do that [win trophies]. But that indicates the caliber we've reached.”

In closing, the manager stated, “It represents a quality that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And our aim is to achieve more lofty ambitions. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
