The beloved crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th installment, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-part season created by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast this spring, according to the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The last season concluded in recent years with a final episode that drew in over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only arrived this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season will open with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to combat corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a offender.

However, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, plot details hinted.

In a statement, the creator commented: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had so many fans track the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new season."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor called appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is back! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters has not yet announced when the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the moment there were no plans for further series.

However, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
