White House Announces Government Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Nears Third Week
The White House confirmed the start of government employee terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats linked to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to stretch into its third consecutive week.
Formal Statement and Initial Details
Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for terminating staff.
Although the official provided no details on which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a DHS spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.
Labor Reaction and Court Actions
Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services used by millions of Americans and pledged to contest the moves in the legal system.
“It is disgraceful that the government has used the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who provide essential functions to the public across the country,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.
The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”
Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until the following week, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be ended soon.
At a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted Senate Democrats for rejecting the Republican proposal, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

Max Stier, the president of the advocacy group, criticized the gridlock’s impact on federal employees.
